Jun. 29--TOKYO -- The value of shipments of flat-panel televisions in calendar 2003 eclipsed that of conventional cathode-ray tube TVs in Japan for the first time ever, an industry body said Tuesday.

Combined shipments of liquid crystal and plasma display TVs shot up 61.3 percent from the previous year to 336.6 billion yen, against 307.9 billion yen for CRT TVs, down 25.4 percent, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association said.

The association defines flat-panel TVs as those with liquid crystal or plasma monitors of over 10 inches.
