Article: Promise made, kept Ames, 40, breaks 0-for-165 drought.

Byline: Ed Sherman

LEMONT, Ill. _ Stephen Ames made a promise to his two boys, Justin and Ryan Michael, before the Cialis Western Open. He told them he would win the first-place trophy.

"I'm going to win this week for you guys," Ames had said.

It was a rather bold vow, considering that at 40, he had gone 0-for-165 in his previous PGA Tour starts. He would have been much safer promising them a new toy.

Fathers, though, don't like letting down their sons. So of all the great moments that descended on Ames, perhaps the best came when Justin learned his father kept his promise Sunday.

"He was like, `You did?' " Ames said.
