SHEDD - An old gristmill on the banks of the Calapooia River a mile east of here will become the southern Willamette Valley's first new state park in three decades.
Oregon park officials have coveted Thompson's Mills for more than a decade - and not just because of the obvious historical value.
The five-story factory, with its intricate system of water-powered gristmills, was one of the oldest continuously operating businesses in Oregon. The hand-hewn timber frame building is as old as the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. Its rundown walls contain a treasure trove of antique machinery.
