MoneyGram International Inc.'s stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol MGI on Thursday, the day after it was spun off by Viad Corp.
MoneyGram is the second-largest international remittance network behind First Data Corp.'s Western Union. The Minneapolis company was spun off by First Data in 1996 and bought by Viad in 1999.
Viad, which is based in Denver, said in a press release that the spinoff gives MoneyGram direct access to capital markets and establishes equity currency for acquisitions.
