Apart from the schemes for promoting North-South trade, the Commission proposals that have the highest profile and are regarded as the most symbolic obviously focus on the issue of direct trade between Northern Cyprus and the rest of the EU. This involves encouraging and facilitating Turkish Cypriot exports (mainly farm produce and fisheries products, but also industrial goods and mining activities) by granting preferential tariffs. Only oranges and lemons are currently allowed to pass through the Greek Cypriot ports and airports on their way to the export markets.
