Mabel Evans Cason was at the center of a political controversy in 1992 when she assailed new Republican Gov. Arne Carlson for not appointing a black to the state Board of Education.
Evans Cason, who had been the board's only black member under the previous governor, DFLer Rudy Perpich, found out from a news conference that Carlson had not reappointed her. Outraged that no blacks would be seated on the board, she shot back at the new governor:
"It is a gross error," she said, adding that she held Carlson responsible for the omission. "African-American students outnumber any other ethnic group."
