Alex Gardner became Lane County's temporary district attorney Wednesday and pledged to continue working in the courtroom as he wrestles with management problems of a rising workload and declining budget.
The six-month appointment came as no surprise. Lane County District Attorney Doug Harcleroad, who is temporarily retiring, had asked the governor to appoint Gardner, a prosecutor in the office, to complete the last six months of the current term. Harcleroad plans to return in January to be sworn in for his sixth four-year term.
