Bob Smith, chairman of the Republican Committee in Onondaga County, is in the middle of one fine political ruckus: To his delight, four county committees in Central New York dumped state Sen. Nancy Larraine Hoffmann and instead backed Tom Dadey, of Syracuse.
While Hoffmann and Dadey pummel each other en route to a September primary, it's worth asking whether Smith is a gutsy chair who wants to advance true party standards or whether he's an ambitious operator trying to put his friends into elected offices.
