KIMI Lee's career in activism has led her to the garment industry. Lee, founding director of the Los Angeles-based Garment Worker Center, is the daughter of a former garment worker. In 1971, a year before she was born, her parents fled Burma while the government was ridding the country of its ethnic Chinese population.
But the event that launched Lee into action was the Aug. 8, 1988 killing of thousands of students protesting the Burmese dictatorship. While at the University of California, Davis, Lee became active in a variety of issues on-campus, serving in student government and later joining the American Civil Liberties Union.
