George Mortimer Pullman pioneered luxury train travel when he built the "Pioneer" in the United States in 1864. Following a visit to Britain, he formed the grand-sounding Pullman Palace Car Co., which grew to dominate the '20s and '30s heyday of luxury train travel, offering the most comfortable, elegant and luxurious carriages ever constructed.
In 1972, the service came to an end, unable to compete with cheap airfares. But in 1977, James Sherwood, founder and chairman of Orient-Express Hotels, bought two Orient Express sleepers at auction in Monte Carlo (where else?), and the restoration process began.
