PHILADELPHIA -- A 6-or 12-hour urine collection can accurately diagnose proteinuria in a woman being evaluated for preeclampsia.
"This allows a more rapid triage of women with increased blood pressure during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy," Dr. Eugene Y. Chang reported in a poster presentation at the annual meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
The standard method for assessing proteinuria in a woman suspected of having preeclampsia is to use a 24-hour urine collection, but this delays confirmation of the diagnosis by a day, said Dr. Chang, an ob.gyn, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
