Jul. 13--Boone County officials have discovered that many roads upgraded in the past are failing, and repairs are likely to become more of a priority than new road construction next year.
The worst damage is on chip-and-seal roads, about a third of which have disintegrated or are severely damaged.
Chip Estabrooks, maintenance operations manager for the Boone County Public Works Department, said the county has 61.65 miles of chip-and-seal roads and about 19 miles have either "turned themselves back to gravel" or are more than 50 percent degraded, ...
