BEDFORD, N.Y. _ Every American schoolboy knows that Benedict Arnold was this country's greatest traitor.
I take that back. According to surveys, nowadays, American schoolboys and even schoolgirls are hard put to tell you what war George Washington fought in, let alone name that conflict's other generals.
For those of us who grew up in the Revolutionary War country of rural New York, however, Arnold and British Maj. John Andre were part of the local folklore_conspirators in a dastardly plot to turn nearby West Point over to the redcoats and possibly capture Gen. Washington himself.
