SANTA ANA, Calif. _ Mexican candy makers and U.S.-based importers are being told to immediately stop bringing children's treats into the United States until they can ensure wrappers are lead-free, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday.
The agency, which sent letters Monday, hopes about 60 companies that were notified will act voluntarily but warned importers they could each face up to $1.7 million in civil penalties for failing to comply.
"We don't want kids to be exposed to lead in a child's product." said commission spokesman Ken Giles.
