PHILADELPHIA _ After nearly two decades of scientific work, the quest to develop an AIDS vaccine has proven difficult and elusive.
More than a dozen companies, academic researchers and the federal government are working on experimental AIDS vaccines, and many are in early human trials.
Experts say an AIDS vaccine is the only way to stop the worldwide epidemic, which has already killed about 20 million and infected 42 million more.
Some of the most promising and broad-based AIDS vaccine research is going on at Merck & Co. Inc. in West Point, Pa., outside Philadelphia, researchers say.
