WASHINGTON _ Defending a controversial anti-terrorism law passed after the Sept. 11 attacks, Attorney General John Ashcroft said Tuesday that the USA Patriot Act had prevented terrorists "from unleashing more death and destruction on our soil" and disputed criticisms that it has curtailed Americans' civil rights.
Launching a national campaign to head off growing criticism of the law, Ashcroft told a conservative think tank that American lives and liberty would be at risk without it.
