PHILADELPHIA _ Whether you call it heresy or call it genius, the Episcopal Church USA made history last week by approving an openly gay man as a bishop.
As the nation and much of the Christian world seemed to watch, the church's General Convention, meeting in Minneapolis, confirmed the election of the Rev. Canon V. Gene Robinson as the next bishop of New Hampshire.
Two days later, it authorized creation of a blessing rite for same-sex unions as an option.
Conservatives were aghast.
