New Delhi, Jul 14 (PTI) To utilise large reserves of thorium, a "carefully balanced" three-stage nuclear power programme has been evolved by Indian Government.
Under this, from the spent fuel of the first stage in which natural uranium is used, plutonium is extracted and used as fuel in the second stage in fast breeder reactors, Federal junior Minister in the Prime Minister Office (PMO) Prithviraj Chavan told the Lower House of Parliament, Lok Sabha, on Wednesday.
In the third stage, Uranium-233, produced by irradiating thorium in nuclear reactor, is used as fuel, he said. Thorium by itself ...
