Buddy Ebsen, the gangly hoofer who achieved sitcom immortality as Jed Clampett, cornpone sage of television's "The Beverly Hillbillies," died Sunday morning at a hospital near Los Angeles. The cause of death was undisclosed. He was 95.
The poor man's Fred Astaire, as the rubber-jointed entertainer was dubbed early in his seven-decade career, was born to dance. Christian Rudolph Ebsen Jr. was the son of a Danish immigrant and his Latvian wife. In Belleville, Ill., and Orlando, Fla., the elder Ebsen ran an academy where his only son and four daughters took lessons.
