A drug found in a hair loss remedy appears to be the first drug to prevent prostate cancer, according to a study released today by the New England Journal of Medicine.

Finasteride, which lowers male hormone levels, reduces men's chances of getting prostate cancer by nearly 25 percent and was so effective relative to a placebo that researchers ended a 10-year clinical trial of the drug nearly one year early.

The drug has its downsides: Men who took finasteride experienced more sexual dysfunction than those who did not. And those who did develop prostate cancer while taking the drug were more likely to have high-grade tumors, ...
