PARIS _ Lance Armstrong has made one of the hardest feats in sports look easy. Only because of that has this run-up to his bid for a fifth straight Tour de France victory seemed difficult by comparison.
Since his initial stunning victory in 1999, Armstrong has showed up at the start line annually, piloted his bike 2,000-plus miles almost without incident and hoisted the trophy on the Champs-Elysees. In each instance, the race has been all but over a week before the official finish.
