In 1969, a British heist film starring Michael Caine and three gravity-defying Mini Coopers opened in America and bombed so completely that the movie remains difficult to find, even on video. Caine was then at the peak of his popularity in the United States, having recently made "Alfie" and "The Ipcress File"; the Mini was the most adored car in England, driven even by the Beatles; yet "The Italian Job" sank like an imported stone.
