The 2003 MazdaSpeed Protege sounds great _ before you even turn the key.

That's because the car comes standard with a 450-watt, six-speaker Pioneer Excelon AM-FM-CD-MP3 stereo that includes an 8-inch subwoofer and a 250-watt amplifier. There's a wireless remote control and a liquid gel 3-D screen that shows swimming fish and slot-machine-like spinning numbers that's very entertaining.

The radio has a face plate that disappears at the push of a button, and it's removable. It's even set up for Sirius satellite radio, although the service wasn't installed on our test car.

Good sounds and the Protege aren't strangers, ...
