It's 1975, and Chevy Van, a pleasant pop song by one-hit wonder Sammy Johns, is playing on your eight-track. Coming soon to a drive-in theater near you: The Van, a film starring Danny DeVito as owner of a car-wash where his employee Bobby spends more time cleaning his own shag-carpeted, waterbed-equipped yellow Dodge van than customers' cars.
And at your local car dealership, front and center is a row of shiny Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge or GMC full-sized vans. By 1978, they'll be selling 870,000 vans a year.
Last year, they sold 330,000. And there haven't been any more hit songs about vans.
