The small postcard lurked just to the right of a pile of cards on the table. We knew it was there, but the pile was so much more fun to deal with.
My son's birthday fell right after high school graduation, so the pile of birthday cards, graduation cards, invitations and thank-you notes represented parties, presents and well wishes for the future.
The other birthday notice, the one on the small postcard, was chilling -"Happy Birthday, you're a male and you're 18. It's time to register for selective service."
