NEW YORK_There was a sense of import at the James Beard Foundation in New York City this year as the staff prepared for its 11th annual "birthday week" events. Monday, May 5, the day the James Beard Awards were presented, also was the 100th anniversary of Beard's birth and everyone was eager that the ceremony and events surrounding it pay tribute to the great man without turning somber.
The Foundation was organized in 1986, a year after Beard's death, as the vehicle to purchase and restore his Greenwich Village home. The home was saved and has become a living memorial where chefs from across the nation and around the world come to ...
