WASHINGTON _ The Bush administration asked the Supreme Court Wednesday to reverse a California-based federal appeals court decision that barred schoolchildren from reciting the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.
In a brief urging the court to take up the controversial case, the Justice Department emphasized that "not every reference to God" amounted to an unconstitutional government endorsement of religion. It said the phrase in the pledge was an "official acknowledgement of our nation's religious heritage," no different than other religious references in public life, including the motto "In God we trust," ...
