SAN JOSE, Calif. _ In an effort to protect its students from the potential spread of SARS, the University of California, Berkeley has banned all incoming students from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and Singapore from taking summer classes _ a decision the University of California recommends its other campuses consider.
UC Berkeley is believed to be the first major university in the country to take such action, which was announced Monday. The decision affects about 500 students who live in those places where the most cases of sudden acute respiratory syndrome have been reported.
