MOSCOW _ A Russian lawmaker who was one of the Kremlin's most ardent critics was gunned down Thursday, the latest in a post-Soviet series of brazen, calculated murders with politicians as targets.
Sergei Yushenkov was shot in the chest four times as he got out of his car and began walking to his Moscow apartment building in the early evening, Russian news agencies reported. A silencer-equipped handgun was found near his body.
"It is obviously the work of a professional killer," Moscow Police Chief Vladimir Pronin told Russia's Tass news agency.
