Jul. 16--SABINE PASS, Texas -- Only a handful of shrimp boats were tied to the docks, as most shrimpers had left for the opening of the Texas shrimping season in the Gulf of Mexico.
The season started Wednesday, a half-hour after sunset, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
The state and federal waters close May 15 each year to allow the brown shrimp to grow.
"We're hoping that it's better than last year," said Nikki Tran of Kim's Seafood in Port Arthur.
