US firm Tanox says that the first patient has been enrolled in a Phase II clinical trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of Xolair (omalizumab) in patients suffering from allergy (immediate hypersensitivity) to peanuts. Developed under a collaboration agreement between Genentech, Novartis and Tanox, Xolair is a first-in-class recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody to IgE currently approved for treatment of adults and adolescents (12 years of age and above) with moderate-to-severe persistent asthma who have a positive skin test or in vitro reactivity to a perennial aeroallergen and whose symptoms are inadequately controlled with inhaled corticosteroids.
