Gov. Rod Blagojevich did the right thing in suspending the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board. But, instead of cleaning up the scandal-ridden agency that controls the hospital market in Illinois, he should kill it.

A creature of a federal rule rescinded 20 years ago, the planning board now serves few purposes, none of them good. It doles out monopolies in the hospital business through its power to approve or reject any hospital construction project in Illinois.
