BELFAST, Northern Ireland _ Although final results will not be known until Friday, early exit polls from Northern Ireland's Assembly elections suggest slim victories for Sinn Fein and the Ulster Unionist Party.
Irish state television said Wednesday that a preliminary analysis of polls showed significant gains for the Rev. Ian Paisley's hard-line Democratic Unionist Party, but not enough to pass the more moderate Ulster Unionist Party.
If the numbers hold up, Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble will remain the leading voice of Protestant unionism in Northern Ireland's shared self-governing institutions but he will be forced ...
