Except for a conventional sketch of Menominee culture when the first Frenchmen stepped ashore, the first chapter of this book. 'The Menominee world before invasion', is apt to discourage all but the anthropologically naive from reading further. And that is a pity, because what follows is a generally sound and engaging history of those people from postcontact time to the beginnings of the reservation period.
