Ingmar Bergman, who turned 86 on Wednesday, is the last imposing name among the international directors who emerged in the 1950s. He continues to justify a loyal, if sometimes perplexed and skeptical, art-house following.
To coincide with the director's birthday, three local institutions - the AFI (at both Kennedy Center and the restored Silver Theatre), the National Gallery of Art and (for a couple of programs) the National Museum of Women in the Arts - are jointly mounting a major retrospective of his movies.
