Britney Spears is working awfully hard, or taking off a lot of clothes at least, to make sure that no one forgets she is the new Madonna.

But that's a superficial come-on compared with the erratic punk-infused whirlwind that is Pink. There's a streetwise credibility to the infectiously poppy fare on "Try This," an album that also succeeds as a thematic departure from the self-absorbed diary entries on her 2001 breakout Missundaztood.

That album's melodrama, on songs such as the dysfunctional family anthem "My Vietnam," is replaced by more buoyant songs that exude fun, romance and anger. Even in her "Like a Virgin" days, ...
