When three movies turn into a franchise that has grossed $1.2 billion here and abroad, it's natural for stories of their beginnings to enter Hollywood lore, and that was certainly true of the Indiana Jones saga.
There's an undeniable charm to the tale of two young filmmakers sitting on the beach in Hawaii and building a sandcastle. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were entitled to a vacation in 1977 and, boy, could they afford it. Spielberg had terrified the world with "Jaws" and Lucas had just launched his dazzling science-fiction fantasy "Star Wars."
