JUPITER, Fla._ St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa left the club on Monday afternoon to return to California, where he will attend the trial of a man accused of assaulting one of his daughters.
La Russa is expected to remain in California through at least Friday; however, delays in assigning the case to a Contra Costa County Superior Court judge Monday and subsequent jury selection could prolong the case for at least a week.
La Russa had informed a handful of players of his departure and left Roger Dean Stadium during Monday's exhibition game against the New York Mets.
