Dec. 30--Carpetbaggers have had a bad name for, oh, maybe 138 years or so.
The name was applied to northerners who went south during the Reconstruction period to take advantage of the opportunities for profit or political office. Never mind that lots of help was needed in rebuilding the South; they got a bad name anyway.
Even today, the term "carpetbagger" is enough to cause trouble in politics. For example, Hillary Clinton's critics labeled her a carpetbagger when she took up residence in New York just in time to qualify for the Senate race that she won.
