Economist Sees Improved Job Picture for Austin, Texas, Area Next Year.

Dec. 13--The Central Texas economy should experience modest growth next year, with rebounding retail sales and 15,400 new jobs, an economist said Friday.

That's a 2.2 percent growth rate, almost triple the rate so far this year. But many of those jobs will be in the service and government sectors, which means that many of the new jobs will pay less than those lost in the manufacturing sector during the downturn.

Ray Perryman, a Waco economist who heads the Perryman Group, presented his 20th annual forecast to business leaders during a luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel on Friday.
