Dec. 14--California beaches could, within a decade, produce something more than sun tans and tourist dollars: fresh water, and in the hundreds of millions of gallons.
The state is seeing an unprecedented explosion of interest in ocean-water desalination projects, with at least 14 proposals up and down the coast -- and Huntington Beach is leading the way.
The Huntington Beach City Council is set to take up the matter Monday in a closely watched vote. If approved, the Huntington plant, to be located at the site of the AES power plant, would be one of the closest to reality of any proposed in the state.
