RailRunner patent holder RailRunner NA spent the past seven years developing its bimodal container technology, which allows standard containers to ride the rails like a railcar and operate over the highway like a truck.
RailRunner may prove more time and cost effective than traditional mechanical methods. According to the Georgia-based company, its technology will allow existing container operations to expand into markets where the traditional double stack is cost prohibitive due to high capital expenses for cranes and property.
"This service is going to have lots of impact on under-served markets," said company communications adviser Mark Metzger.
