With the steady certainty of a mantra, semiconductor industry companies today repeat the word standards as a way to promote themselves and their products. Gone are the days when companies sought a competitive advantage by building a proprietary technology that would not interoperate with a rival's products.
But that doesn't mean that the road to creating industry standards is without pain, or even the occasional highly elaborate detour when the main path seems to be hopelessly blocked. Several companies in the ultra-wideband (UWB) space are now creating their own detours.
