Dec. 10--CARLSBAD, Calif.--The City Council unanimously and enthusiastically gave the green light Tuesday to building Carlsbad's first public golf course in a $29 million project, a decision that drew applause from audience members who have waited years.

"It will be another feather in Carlsbad's cap for its citizens," said Councilman Mark Packard.

Voters in 1989 approved spending city money on a golf course, but acquiring the land and solving a host of environmental challenges delayed the project. The city finally won state Coastal Commission approval in August.
