Nov. 27--LAKELAND, Fla.--If not a vote, then the Florida Citrus Commission can at least expect a serious debate at its December meeting, with strong opinions weighing in on whether to cut growers' box taxes for this season.
Commissioner John Alexander, a Lake Wales grower, opted out of raising the contentious issue at the November commission meeting because he figured there weren't enough votes to support the cause.
Also, the commission relied upon the legal opinion of Citrus Department counsel Ken Keck that it did not have the legal authority to vote on reducing the box tax because an Aug. 1 deadline expired.
