Jul. 21--The U.S. Department of Agriculture plans to buy 34 million pounds of raisins for child nutrition and other food assistance programs nationwide.
"This a good start," said John Beck, president of the California Raisin Marketing Board and Raisin Administrative Committee in Fresno.
"The 17,000 tons came a bit shy of the 20,000 to 30,000 (tons) the industry had hoped for, but we are grateful."
Beck said he hopes there will be more federal government purchases this year.
Since Oct. 1, the USDA has bought 2.7 million pounds of raisins. Last ...
