Nov. 9--Ninety years after Paul and Edward Herre founded a plumbing and heating business in their father's barn on North Fourth Street in Harrisburg, orange Herre Bros. vans are a familiar sight on midstate highways.

But it hasn't always been a smooth road for the mechanical and electrical contractor.

Well into the 1960s the company continued expanding until it nearly collapsed in the next decade after some bad investments. Four local banks ended up taking it over from the last Herre family owners in 1975.

It was at that low point that Herre Bros. was reborn.
