As I write this column my grandfather is dying. He's 99, has lived a good life, and has said he's ready to die. As a Family Practitioner, death is not an uncommon part. of my practice. I care for a great number of elderly patients, many living in nursing homes. One to two die every month. Many physicians consider the death of any patient as a defeat. I consider the death of a patient a defeat only if the patient's last days and death don't occur in the way the patient would have wanted.
