The number of mobile subscribers worldwide will top 2bn by mid-2006, says wireless analyst EMC.
With subscribers currently totalling 1.5bn, EMC's report estimates that, boosted by 240m people subscribing in both 2004 and 2005, more than 2bn people will subscribe globally by July 2006.
However, this research is significantly more optimistic than recent claims from communications firm Yankee Group that although the industry is on track to gain 2bn mobile phone customers, projected growth rates make it unlikely this will be achieved even by 2010 (NMA 24 June).
