MANY people have welcomed the William Hill Northumberland Plate, an open handicap, as a novelty. This includes an excellent letter published today from Russell Hulme, the owner of a finalist. Others, notably Peter Meldrum, panned it.
It's one of those things where nobody's 'wrong' - but, on balance, Meldrum's view carries more weight with me. There are few things more exciting in greyhound racing than proper handicap racing. You get grandstand finishes with the result in doubt until the last second. Will the scratch runner get there?
